Job Opportunities in Stocktaking

This is an exciting time for Abacus Valuers Limited. As we continue to grow, we need to increase our workforce and are recruiting in several areas.

All positions are part time in the first instance with excellent opportunities for people to quickly progress within the company. The information below will give you an insight into our company and what being a stocktaker is all about.

About Abacus Valuers

For over 25 years Abacus Valuers has provided a wide range of highly professional stocktaking and stock auditing services for all types of businesses. We operate throughout the UK and the Republic of Ireland and are now expanding into mainland Europe. More information about our company can be found at www.abacusvaluers.co.uk

Our staff use the latest barcode scanners and stocktaking software systems which we have developed ourselves. It is unique within the stocktaking world and means that the information we collect is as accurate as possible.

Teams of stocktakers meet up, normally early morning, and travel together to a shop or business for a day. The larger the stocktake, the larger the team. We count all the stock by using barcode scanners to scan the barcodes on items and then key in the quantity we've counted. Stocktakers normally work within their base region but sometimes have to travel further afield.

What being a stocktaker involves

Our staff are our greatest asset. They are all well-trained, conscientious and take great pride in what they do. We don’t use agency or casual staff and we demand the highest levels of honesty, integrity, accuracy and reliability. We must always offer the best service possible to our clients and it is for this reason that work is allocated based on merit. Quite a few of our staff have been with us for many years and some are now in senior positions.

  • To help you decide whether stocktaking work is for you, here is some important information about what the job involves:
  • Previous experience is not necessary as we provide new staff with full training
  • Everyone starts as a stocktaker. Progression within the company is down to the ability of the individual, with potential for staff to become a Team Leader where they run stocktakes.
  • The on-site working day varies according to the job but we guarantee to pay a minimum 5 hour day, plus some travel pay, which is detailed overleaf.
  • The work is part-time and subject to availability. Schedules are drawn up on a weekly basis so you know a week in advance when you are working and where you are going. Senior stocktakers and Team Leaders are more likely to be full time.
  • One of the most enjoyable aspects of stocktaking work is the variety. We seldom work in the same place two days running - we meet staff and management of different organisations each day.
  • Stocktaking suits both men and women and our staff come from a wide variety of different backgrounds and age groups.
  • Generally, stocktaking work is regular throughout the year with some seasonal fluctuations. We are usually very busy between January and March; quieter during the Christmas period and mid-summer; with regular work in the other months.
  • Much of our work takes place Monday to Friday, with mainly morning starts. To avoid the traffic our teams normally leave very early each morning. Jobs also crop up at weekends and sometimes overnight. Everyone is expected to do his or her fair share of such work and flexibility is essential.
  • We prefer stocktakers to have a car but we also recruit people without cars although they will still need to be able to get to a meeting point to be picked up. Team members frequently take it in turns to pick each other up on the way there.
  • Authorised drivers will drive on a regular basis from the meeting point to where the job is taking place and do the return journey. To keep our carbon footprint as low as possible, we use the minimum number of cars to travel to jobs and therefore staff travel together.
  • A telephone is essential so that we can contact you.

PHILLIP PUGH PRODUCT ACCOUNTING TEAM LEADER   SEASALT CORNWALL

“We were pleased with Abacus Valuers involvement in our stock count; they did everything to ensure that it ran as smoothly as possible, and were very flexible in tailoring their methods to our requirements. The attention to detail, efficiency and pride in their work shown by their staff fully justified Abacus Valuers insistence on the use of their own employees rather than temporary staff from an agency.”

ANTHONY HITCHCOCK STOCK CONTROLLER   THE ROMAN BATHS (BATH)

“We have used Abacus Valuers since 2005 and find the company to be reliable, accurate and well organised. They are very good to work with; they are efficient, friendly and give a first class service.”

AIDEEN MCGEOUGH CENTRAL OPERATIONS MANAGER   THE ORIGINAL FACTORY SHOP (TOFS)

“ISS have developed a great working relationship with Abacus Valuers over the last 10 years. As our chosen Stock Management Partners Abacus Valuers have provided us with first class external audits to assist us with running our SPAR retail stores within the Defence & Healthcare sectors. They have helped us gain far better controls which has meant that our Store Managers really focus on the crucial processes around Stock Management. They have always been flexible and honest when we have needed additional support which has been so helpful. I would not hesitate in recommending Abacus Valuers to any business with a requirement for this expertise.”

JIM HOWARD HEAD OF ISS RETAIL STORES   ISS DEFENCE

“In the two years of working at Yankee Candle, I have been working with Abacus Valuers and have found them to be extremely professional, obliging and adaptable. No request seems to be too much trouble often going out of their way to deliver. I once had to call on Abacus Valuers to reschedule 100 stocktakes in the space of 24 hours which they did. I would thoroughly recommend using Abacus Valuers above any other stocktaking company”.
